Fall Letter From the President

Fall 2012 brings exciting changes to local alumni community.

Hello Fellow Maroons,

During a recent call with alumni club presidents throughout the United States, we had the opportunity to hear from the new president of the Alumni Board of Governors, Michael Peters. While we see these changes occurring at the national level, I’d like to bring to your attention a few of the exciting developments in our local community.

First, the DC Board welcomes its newest officers, Dan Arking and Mariangela Anzalone. Dan Arking is taking over as the career chair. In this role, Dan plans to continue Rachel Goldman’s amazing quarterly career events, while also looking to expand our extern/intern programming. I hope that you will support Dan in his new role and, if circumstances allow, consider hosting a DC-area extern/intern. Mariangela, whom you may know from our many Thirsty Thursday events, is stepping in as the programming chair. She has a lot of fun ideas, and I look forward to attending many of her events.

Current Board officers Rachel Goldman and Joe Anzalone are stepping up to new roles as well. Joe is the new vice president and will focus on developing new volunteers. If you’ve ever considered becoming more involved, now is the time. Please speak with Joe about any ideas that you have or if you’d like to learn about current volunteer opportunities with the club. Rachel is taking on the newly created position as affinity group liaison. The DC region currently has an active Military Affinity Group, LGBT Alumni Network, Public Interest Networking Group, and Alumni Law Society, to name a few. Please reach out to Rachel to learn more.

I would also like to thank Laura Donovan Haines, who is stepping down after serving as president of the Alumni Board of Governors for the past two years and a member for the last six years. In addition to her role as on the Alumni Board of Governors, where she has contributed a considerable amount of time and energy on behalf of the entire alumni community, Laura also has been a great ambassador for the local community. In one of her last acts as president, Laura recently presented awards to three local alumni at the 2012 Alumni Weekend: Judge Robert Bork, AB’48, JD’53, was awarded the Professional Achievement Award; Eric Rosenthal, AB’85, was awarded the Public Service Award; and Matt Whitaker, MBA’95, was awarded Alumni Service Award. I hope that you will join me in congratulating the DC-area recipients of these awards!

Finally, I would like to thank all of the alumni who embraced my challenge from the last brochure to introduce themselves to fellow alumni when out in the area. So far, I have heard of connections occurring at a Home Depot, a grocery store, and a Nationals game. Keep it going, and I look forward to meeting you!

Go Maroons!
