Alison Elissa Cardy is a professional career direction coach who specialiazes in helping people get unstuck and onto satisfying career paths. Over the past five years, she has worked with hundreds of people to improve their careers through speaking engagements, workshops, and one on one coaching. From Washington to the World: Careers in International Affairs

Washington has always been a center for career opportunities in international affairs, and the number and scope of these opportunities has never before been so vast. Beyond the core areas of international relations, national security, and diplomacy, many fields traditionally considered ‘domestic’ in focus increasingly involve substantial international components. At the same time, military and diplomatic spending faces increased pressure while the cast of international actors has grown more diverse to include NGOs, private ventures, and public-private partnerships to a greater extent than ever before. This highly dynamic landscape has created many new career opportunities, but is also more difficult for professionals at any stage of their careers to navigate.

This panel will include University of Chicago alumni who have spent their careers working in a variety of capacities on the international scene and who will share their insights on how to break into and navigate the international job market in Washington, including:

     

    Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu, PhD'02 - Senior Economist, International Monetary Fund

    Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu was born in Mexico City. He studied at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), where he obtained a BA in Economics, and at the University of Chicago, where he obtained MA and PhD degrees in Economics. He began his career as an Economist in the Research Department at Banco de Mexico, Mexico’s central bank. From 2005 to 2007, Rodrigo worked at the World Bank as an Economist in the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management unit of the Latin America and the Caribbean region. He has also worked for the Federal Government in Mexico at the Ministry of Finance at the Ministry of the Economy. Since 2010, Rodrigo has worked as a Senior Economist in the African Department at the International Monetary Fund, where he currently works as desk officer for Angola.


    Emily Janoch, AB'05 - Knowledge and Learning Advisor, CARE USA

    Emily Janoch is the Knowledge and Learning Advisor for CARE USA's Gender and Empowerment team.  She has nine years experience in international development, focusing on engaging communities to develop solutions that work for the people who need them most. Emily's commitment to international development started as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali. Her work on holding NGOs accountable to community needs and creating local capacity has been presented at Harvard, Imperial College London, and USAID seminars on USAID Forward. Emily also has technical focuses in health, food security, and gender and empowerment. Emily earned a BA in International Studies from the University of Chicago, and a Masters' in Public Policy in Internationals and Global Affairs from the Harvard Kennedy School.


    Justin Logan, MA'09 - Director of Foreign Policy Studies, Cato Institute

    Justin Logan is the director of foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. He is an expert on U.S. grand strategy, international relations theory, and American foreign policy. His current research focuses on the shifting balance of power in Asia - specifically with regard to China - and the formation of U.S. grand strategy under unipolarity. He has authored numerous policy studies and articles on topics including international relations theory, U.S.-China policy, U.S.-Russia policy, stabilization and reconstruction operations, and the policy approaches to a nuclear Iran. His articles have appeared in Foreign Policy, the National Interest, the Harvard International Review, Orbis, the Foreign Service Journal, National Review, the American Conservative, Reason, Politico, the American Prospect, and the Chicago Sun-Times, among others. He has made regular appearances on a variety of broadcast media including the BBC, MSNBC, Fox News, Voice of America. Logan holds a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in international relations from American University.

     

    Marcia D. Occomy, MA'92 - Specialist Leader in the Emerging Markets Division, Deloitte Consulting

    Marcia D. Occomy is currently a Specialist Leader in the Emerging Markets Division of Deloitte Consulting LLP. She is interested in international relations, international development, government finance transformation and strategy, change management, and performance measurement and performance management. While at Deloitte, Marcia has led or advised on multiple United State Agency for International Development project assignments, most recently as an Advisor on the Economic Government reform project supporting the Ministry of Finance, Republic of South Sudan. She also served as Team Leader of the Capacity Development Program in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2012, Ministry of Finance Advisor in Egypt in 2006, and Deputy Project Manager/Advisor in Ukraine from 2005 to 2006. Ms. Occomy has also served as Senior Advisor for assignments in Iraq (2003-2005), Kosovo (2001-2003), and Kazakhstan (1999-2001). Marcia served as an Analyst at the Office of Management and Budget from 1992 until 1999. She received a B.A. from Vassar College and an M.A. from the University of Chicago.
