Dr. Suskind drew the title Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain—and of the initiative for which she was awarded the University of Chicago Medical Faculty Award for program innovation—from research showing that the more words children are exposed to in their first four years, the higher their achievement level on a wide range of developmental skills. With this in mind, as well as her knowledge of brain plasticity, Dr. Suskind, a Chicago cochlear implant surgeon, has formulated ways parents can be more attentive and descriptive when talking with their children.

Dr. Suskind will be in conversation with Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education and former chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools.
