Since its opening only about a decade ago, upon the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ historic flight, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center continues to draw about a million visitors a year. As the annex to the most popular Smithsonian site, the National Air and Space museum, the two gigantic hangars, the Boeing Aviation Hangar and the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar significantly add to the recording of epic milestones in the history of American flight. Giving access to the public with its panoramic views from multi-level walkways rising four stories, the Center houses 150 aircraft, artifacts, rockets, missiles, satellites, spacecraft, a restoration facility, archives, a conservation laboratory, and additional collections that could not be contained in the museum location on the National Mall. Within one hour’s drive out of Washington DC and located on the grounds of 100 acres just south of Dulles International Airport, the Udvar – Hazy Center is also home to such attractions as the space shuttle Discovery, the fastest jet ever flown, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, the Concorde, and the Gemini IV space capsule.
